Effective Spring 2004 , the Asian American Studies (AAS) IDP has renumbered many of its courses to better correspond with the requirements of its major and minor.

Renumbered AAS Classes

AAS Research Methods

All AAS research methods classes are now numbered: AAS 100-109, AAS 187A, AAS 191A

AAS Theme

All AAS theme classes are now numbered: AAS 110-M129, AAS 187B, AAS 191B

AAS Populations and Communities (formerly AAS Ethnic Specific)

All AAS Populations and Communities (AAS Ethnic Specific) classes are now numbered: AAS 130-149, AAS 187C, AAS 191C

AAS Interethnic, Race, and Gender

All AAS interethnic, race, and gender classes are now numbered: AAS 160-169, AAS 187D, AAS 191D

AAS Asian Transnationalism & Diaspora (these are generally elective classes)
All AAS Asian Transnationalism & Diaspora classes are now numbered: AAS 170-179, AAS 187E, AAS 191E

IMPORTANT : Often more than one class is offered in the 187 series and 191 series per quarter. For example, there may be two or three 187B courses available in one quarter. NEW Numbers and Enrollment Procedures for Internships, Directed Readings , Research Projects

  • Community and Corporate Internships are now numbered AAS 195.
  • Directed Readings/Individual Studies are now numbered AAS 197.
  • Research Projects are now numbered AAS 199. You MUST turn in a research paper or project for this course.

IMPORTANT: Enrollment in these courses are limited to a maximum of seven (7) per professor per quarter. Therefore, you must PLAN AT LEAST A QUARTER IN ADVANCE to take these classes.

Also, no more than 8 graded units (2 classes) of 195s, 197s, or 199s (or a combination of these courses) may be applied to the AAS major. No more than 4 graded units (1 class) may be applied to the AAS minor.

In order to sign up for AAS 195s, 197s, and 199s you MUST do the following:

  • Have an Asian American Studies faculty to sponsor your project THE QUARTER BEFORE YOU ENROLL IN THE CLASS.
  • If you are doing an internship you MUST ALSO see AAS Internship Counselors Meg Thornton ( meg@ucla.edu ) and Sefa Aina ( sefa@ucla.edu ) THE QUARTER BEFORE YOU ENROLL IN THE CLASS.
  • Fill out an 195, 197, or 199 Enrollment Form COMPLETELY . The forms can be downloaded from your My.UCLA webpage.
  • You MUST have the signatures of your faculty sponsors AND Min Zhou, the Chair of the Asian American Studies IDP.
  • Turn in completed and signed 195, 197, or 199 forms to the Registrar's Office (1113 Murphy Hall) by Friday of second week of the quarter to avoid late enrollment fees.
