| There
are several changes to the Asian American Studies undergraduate
major and minor effective as of Fall 2002. Please read the
following information carefully and completely as the
changes will affect program planning for the major and minor.
Renumbering and Reuniting of Courses:
Beginning Fall 2002 Asian American Studies 99 will be renumbered
Asian American Studies 10,
and Asian American Studies 100 will be renumbered Asian
American Studies 20. Asian American Studies
10 and 20 will also be 5-unit
courses.
In
addition, Asian American Studies
10 will fulfill
a Historical Analysis General Education (GE) requirement,
and Asian American Studies 20
will fulfill Social Analysis GE requirement.
Students can therefore use Asian American Studies 10 and Asian
American Studies 20 if they are Asian American Studies minors,
double majors with Asian American Studies as their SECONDARY
MAJOR, or if they are non-Asian American Studies majors.
Students CANNOT
take Asian American Studies 10 if they have already taken
Asian American Studies 99, and Asian American Studies 20 if
they have already taken Asian American Studies 100.
Although Asian American Studies 99 and Asian American Studies
100 will be applied as core requirements to the Asian American
Studies major and minor, they CANNOT
be used retroactively as GE courses.
Unlike Asian American Studies 10 and 20, Asian American Studies
99 and 100 were NOT approved as GE courses by the College
of Letters and Science. Asian American Studies 99 was numbered
as an undergraduate seminar. Undergraduate seminars are generally
not approved as a General Education courses by the College
of Letters and Science. Asian American Studies 100 was numbered
as an upper division course. The College of Letters and Science
generally does not accept upper division courses as General
Education courses. The only exceptions are a small number
of courses offered in, for example, Ethnomusicology, Film
and Television, and Musicology.
Majors:
Research Methods Requirement
As of Fall 2002, History 99 will no longer be applied as a
research methods course for Asian American Studies majors.
Instead, History 197 MAY
be accepted with Asian American
Studies departmental counselor consent. You must see an Asian
American Studies departmental counselor PRIOR to enrolling
in the Hist 197 in order for the seminar to count towards
the research methods requirement.
Mandatory
Counseling Appointments for Asian American Studies Majors
Who Have:
1) Taken Asian American Studies
99
2) Taken History 99 as a Research Methods course
3) BUT HAVE NOT TAKEN Asian American Studies 100/20 AS OF
FALL 2002
If
you have done ALL three points ABOVE (that is have taken AAS
99, History 99, but must STILL take AAS 100), you MUST see
an Asian American Studies Departmental Counselor. If you do
not, YOU MAY BE HELD FOR GRADUATION.
If you have any questions about the changes to the major and
minor, please make an appointment to see Sefa Aina or Stacey
Hirose at 3230 Campbell Hall. Appointments with the academic
counselors are available on weekdays during the academic year.
