NEW ASIAN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT FOR AAS MAJOR
The
East Asian Languages and Cultures Department recently reassessed
its Chinese and Korean language sequences for "heritage" speakers (that is, the Chinese 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A series
and the Korean 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A series). As of 2002-2003
the Chinese and Korean programs determined that Chinese 1A,
2A, 3A and Korean 1A, 2A, 3A constituted one year proficiency
in each language.
As
the result, beginning with the 2003-2004 academic year, Asian
American Studies (AAS) students who DECLARE the AAS major
in Fall 2003 and THEREAFTER AND who are PLACED by UCLA language
exam into the Chinese or Korean heritage language series MUST
now complete Chinese 1A, 2A, 3A or Korean 1A, 2A, 3A to fulfill
the first year Asian language proficiency requirement for
the AAS major.
In
other words, AAS will no longer accept only the completion
of Chinese 2A or Korean 2A to fulfill the Asian language requirement.
Students DECLARING the AAS major as of Fall 2003 must now
complete Chinese 3A or Korean 3A to meet the first year Asian
language proficiency requirement.
If
you have any questions about this matter, please see either
Sefa Aina or Stacey Hirose, Departmental Counselors for the
Asian American Studies IDP. You can make a scheduled appointment
with them at 3230 Campbell Hall.
