Jumpstart UCLA is a one-year AmeriCorps program, looking for students to teach in preschool classrooms and help prepare children from Los Angeles' low-income communities for kindergarten. It is our core belief that providing high-quality education to all young children contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Jumpstart members will complete 300 hours of service during the school year to earn $1,221 EDUCATION AWARD upon completion of program.  In addition to becoming an AmeriCorps member and earning an education award, the Jumsptart Member is hired as a work-study student employee. 

Job Description

Position is approx. 12-15 hours per week, all of which are flexible except students must be available regularly during one of the following times:

T/Th 9:00 – 11:00 am OR 9:30 – 11:30 am (plus transportation time)
W/F 9:00 – 11:00 am OR 9:30 – 11:30 am (plus transportation time)
M/W 1:30 – 3:30 (plus transportation time) (TBD)

Weekly duties include: 

  • 4 hours/week: Jumpstart sessions (activities designed to develop early literacy skills) with a team of peers in a preschool classroom.
  • 2 hours/week: Team planning meetings.
  • 4 hours/week: Child Centered Time at a preschool during the regular school day.
  • 4+ hours/week: Individual prep time

Additionally, Corps Member must communicate with partner children’s families and share strategies for helping the children. Participate in intensive pre-service and on-going training. Attend periodic service days.


Experience working with young children, and/or a desire to learn more about early childhood education. Strong language and communication skills. Ability to build relationships and collaborate with children’s families. A willingness to learn about session implementation and planning. Community service experience and an ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work well on a team. Availability, dependability, and willingness to be flexible. Maturity and good judgment in relating to Jumpstart peers, partners, and families.
