News: Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Summer 2017 and Academic Year 2017-18 - Deadline: February 22, 2017

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship program supports training in modern foreign languages and related area studies during the summer and academic year.


FLAS fellowship applications will be accepted for the following areas and languages. Click the links to access the online applications for each world area:


·         East Asia (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean)

·         Southeast Asia (Indonesian, Filipino/Tagalog, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese)

·         Latin America (Quechua, Portuguese, Nahuatl, and Advanced Spanish)



  • Graduate or undergraduate student
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Studying the language at intermediate or advanced level



  • Graduate award for academic year: $15,000 stipend, up to $18,000 tuition/fees
  • Undergraduate award for academic year: $5,000 stipend, up to $10,000 tuition/fees
  • Summer award: $2,500 stipend, up to $5,000 tuition/fees, optional up to $1,000 travel support



  • Academic year award: Take one language and one area studies course each term for letter grade
  • Summer award: Supports intensive language study only
  • Must be enrolled full-time
  • Must submit report at end of fellowship period detailing courses taken and progress in language
